Biography

Allama Dr. Muhammad Asim Azmi (مدظلہ العالی) was born on 29th Muharram 1368 AH, corresponding to 1st December 1948 CE, in Mohalla Karimuddinpur, Ghosi, Mau (U.P., India), and was raised in a vast scholarly and spiritual environment.

He belongs to a noble family that had settled centuries ago in the historic settlement of "Qurouli Basi" (near Dohri Ghat). Due to a conflict with local brethren, other Muslims of the settlement migrated with their families and settled in Mohalla Karimuddinpur, Ghosi. His ancestors were simple, steadfast Sunni Muslims who met their economic needs through the weaving industry. His great-grandfather, the late Mr. Muhammad Abbas, was an expert in the art of soldiering and swordsmanship. In 1893, he valiantly fought against rioters who attacked the settlement, killing their hero and forcing them to flee. His grandfather, the late Muhammad Umar, was less educated but a devout and true Muslim; Hazrat Sadr al-Shari’ah (Allah have mercy on him) respectfully called him "Guru Ji." He had six sons and one daughter.

Dr. Asim Azmi's respected father, Hazrat Maulana Muhammad Salim Amjadi (Allah have mercy on him), was a devout scholar. He received his early education in Ghosi, then entered Jamia Ashrafia Mubarakpur for intermediate studies, and later enrolled in the central Darul Uloom Mazhar-e-Islam Bareilly Sharif for further education, graduating from there in 1364 AH. He was a special disciple and favorite of Sadr al-Shari’ah, who sent him to Pali Marwar, Rajasthan, for the service of religion. There, from 1946 to 1988, he performed unforgettable religious and academic services at Madrasa Amjadiya Masjid Chhipan for about 42 years. The people of Pali remain indebted to his favors. After 1988, due to poor health, he permanently resided in his hometown Ghosi, where he answered the call of his Lord on 15 Safar 1424 AH / 18 April 2003.

Dr. Asim Azmi's respected mother, Kabir al-Nisa, daughter of Mr. Abdul Ahad bin Abdul Samad Idrisi, shouldered the entire burden of upbringing and education while his father was busy with religious services in Pali. The excellent manner in which she raised and educated Dr. Asim and his brothers, Master Muhammad Qasim and Dr. Muhammad Qaim Azmi, alongside other household chores, is to her credit. This achievement is praiseworthy and exemplary. It is the miracle of her training that the world remembers Dr. Asim as a researcher, historian, and dignified scholar, and recognizes Dr. Muhammad Qaim Azmi as an experienced physician and skilled writer.
